Day 1: Cusco – Pitumarca – Quesiuno – Ausangate – Anantapata – Warmisaya – Surineqocha

We will collect you from your hotel in Cusco around 5:00 am, then we’ll drive to Pitumarca, where we’ll have a stop to supply the last items before reaching the trailhead. You also have the chance to take a local breakfast at some restaurants around. We continue to drive for another hour and reach Quesiuno, 4,370 meters (14,357 feet), where our hike begins. After repacking our trekking gear, we start hiking in a green valley for an hour, then walk on a gradually ascending path where you will see the mystical Apu Ausangate, which is considered the highest snow peak in Cusco. While you are hiking, you will appreciate some picturesque communities and immerse yourself in a deep connection with nature. You will also see some herds of alpacas.

Once we have gotten the pass, you will appreciate the incredible views of the Pucaqocha Lake at the bottom of Ausangate Mountain, enjoy the truly panoramic view of the glacier, and see how the snow is melting and the water runs to create the most fascinating landscapes in the high Andes. You can feel the profound energy of the mountains deep inside. After enjoying the beautiful landscape, we continue our hike to Anantapata, where our delicious lunch awaits us. rest for a bit, relaxing in the green field. Afterwards, we hike up to the next pass called Warmisaya, 4,920 meters (16,141 feet). From here, you’ll get the first view of the Rainbow Mountain in the distance. We then descend for half an hour to reach our camp, which is down in the valley next to the lake. Then, we enjoy our tea time and dinner before going to rest.

Surineqocha – Rainbow Mountain – Red Valley – Llactoc – Cusco

This day we wake up very early in order to see the sunrise at Rainbow Mountain. 4:00 am is the wake-up call. Enjoy a hot Coca tea, enjoy an Andean breakfast prepared by our professional chef, and be ready for the most beautiful adventure in the Andes. We will ascend gradually for about an hour and a half, then we’ll arrive at the view point of Rainbow Mountain, which is 5,036 meters (16.522 feet) and will amaze you with its colors. You’ll have the time to explore and capture the best moments, and our guide will show you where the best angles are before the big groups arrive.

After we have explored the natural marvel in the Andes, we continue hiking towards the fascinating Red Valley. It seems like you are on another planet, and you probably won’t see many people due to the fact that only a few people have the chance to explore this incredible spot. Your guide will take you through the circuit and allow you to enjoy different views at each corner.

Finally, we will hike down to the valley, following the path, and embark on our bus drive to our lunch spot, then drive for 2 more hours back to your hotel in Cusco.

  • Pre-departure briefing

    Once you book the tour with us, you will get a notification about the pre-departure briefing, where you will meet up with your tour guide at your hotel the night before your Rainbow Mountain departure. During this briefing, you will receive important details about your hike of Ausangate.

Transportations

  • Private Transport

    We included all the transportation during your tour. We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and take you to the beginning of the hike. The bus returning once you are done with the Rainbow Mountain trek to Cusco will drop you off at your hotel.

Equipment

  • Duffel Bag

    After your briefing, you will be available to receive a duffel bag that you need to fill with your personal items. It has to be a maximum of 6 kg, including your sleeping bag and mattress. This duffel bag will be transported by the horses.

  • Camping Gear

    During this 2-Day trek, we will provide you with camping gear, a tent, a mattress, and a dining tent. Our team will transport all these and set them up for you.

  • Medical First Aid Kit

    All tour guides at Peru Day Trips are very well trained in first aid. Also, they are trained on how to supply balloon oxygen if someone requires it.

  • Meals

    We know food is such an important part of any vacation, and getting the right fuel on an active holiday is crucial. We include 1 breakfast 2 lunch and 1 dinner And of course, we cater to all dietary restrictions. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and others—just let us know. Our chefs are well-trained to prepare the best food you’ve ever had with local and organic ingredients.

  • Water

    We provide water from the first lunch until the last lunch after we are done with the tour. Keep in mind that you need to bring a water container; we recommend 2 litters.

  • Sleeping bag

    Every customer needs a sleeping bag for one night; if you don’t have your own, we can hire you a down sleeping bag with a temperature resistance of -10°C.

  • Travel Insurance

    We recommend buying travel insurance before leaving your country in case something happens during your visit to Peru.

  • Tips for our team

    Tips are not included. Tipping the team is usual on any excursion in Cusco, and although we pay good salaries to our entire team, tips are welcome as a token of your appreciation for the team hard work.

  • Good daypack (the smaller, the better)
  • Water storage: Water reservoir like Camelback is encouraged – but enough for at least 2-3 liters.
